Background

I designed screens for a cafe-management mobile game named Mythical Cafe. In a fantastical world, players recruit magical beings as staff like fairies and vampires. I illustrated the cafe, gameplay, daily missions, settings, and customization screens.

Initial Sketches

First, I did a mindmap and initial sketches to develop a stronger concept of the game. I continued to develop the top left cafe because it had the cozy but magical vibe I was looking for. Second, I developed the characters who will be staff for your cafe.

Developed Sketches

Next, I developed a more complete sketch of the cafe, including customers to demonstrate how gameplay works. Since the player can recruit magical beings as staff, I also illustrated those gameplay scenes where you recruit a vampire and witch. Furthermore, I designed the daily missions and settings overlays.

Color Studies

From the beginning, I did many rounds of color studies. At first, my goal was to create a mysterious, magical mood with darker colors. However, I pivoted to a more vibrant, fun color palette which better suits a mobile game. Furthermore, I retained magical elements in the environment.

Final Work

Through this project, I learned the importance of constant iteration in order to improve my work. I did many rounds of sketching and color studies to develop the best product. Furthermore, I had to keep to a specific timeline over 3 months, through setting reasonable goals for each week. This was very valuable so I always knew I was on track. Finally, it was enjoyable being able to combine my joys for both illustration and UX. Overall, this game strengthened my understanding of iteration, goal-setting, and time management for long-term projects.
